Music Lately

Here's a little preview of a bunch of Joey's footage I'm about to post from recent weeks spent with my Familiar Faces family. Here we all are on the set of Lil Mama's new vid for G-Slide in Harlem doing a small introduction to her team for BET Access Granted. They covered the behind the scenes for the shoot. Coming up are new songs, pics and video footage of all of us getting it in in the studio, dance rehearsals, cockin off on the terrace, or on the set of Lil Mama's new vid for G-Slide featuring Kadar. For a preview of what we've been up to in the studio go to www.myspace.com/negus718 and listen to "So High," which is a group track featuring Familiar Faces artists Negus, Paula Perry, Q-45, Peter Toh, Kadar, and Saucy. Last night me and Mama put finishing touches on writing and demoing the new version of Truly In Love which should hopefully appear on her album "Voice of the Young People" due out this fall. Paula and Q have recorded plenty of new songs which should start appearing on myspaces soon. Speaking of the space, my myspace is looking outdated and I am days away from refreshing the music player with some brand new pifferiffic recordings from Familiar Studio.

More New Paula Perry

www.myspace.com/paulaperrymusic and check out "Familiar" and "Wonder Woman" which we cut at Putnam.

Born and raised not far from what was known as Murder Ave. (Myrtle Avenue) in Brooklyn New York, Paula Perry earned the title The Queen Of Fort Greene by battling any and all M.C.s, male or female. Paula's hardcore in your face style was cultivated by the same streets once ran by such gangsters as Supreme Magnetic, Killa Ben (RIP) and the original 50 Cent. (RIP). As you will hear in her songs, Paula's life reads like an urban novel.
During the time Paula was in attendance at New York Technical College, she was introduced to Master Ace (Juice Crew / the Inc.) Ace was impressed with her skills enough to add Paula to the Inc. team. Paula left school to go on tour. Soon thereafter she recorded "Who You Jackin" and the introduction for the Slaughter House LP. While on tour, Paula gained a reputation for her hardcore style, the music industry as well as the streets showed her much love and respect. After hitting up every radio station, her fan base grew tremendously, especially in the west coast.

In 1996 the Inc. released "Paula's Jam." The single became hot in the streets and sold 20,000 copies in the first week with no financial backing. As a result, Paula was offered a contract from Loose Cannon / PolyGram Records. Before Paula had an opportunity to record again Loose Cannon Folded and Paula's contract was picked up by Mercury records. Shortly thereafter, The Seagram Company purchased PolyGram Records, which then absorbed the company into its Universal Music Group and Paula landed at Motown records. It was at Motown Paula completed her album.

Motown Records saw fit to make available an all-star cast to support Paula's efforts. Paula has recorded with Brian McKnight, Kelly Price, The Lost Boys, Rah Diggah, and Nikkie D. The Producers for the album included Rodney Jerkins (Mary J Blige, Brandy, Aaliya) Easy Mo B (Notorious BIG, Craig Mack, Tupac) Cark Kent (Lil Kim Rakim, Jay-Z), Jesse West, Fanatic and D.J. Premiere who produced the hit single "Extra Extra". Paula was also called upon to record a remix with music legend Tina Turner titled "Something Beautiful Remains." The initial turmoil of the continual label purchases and Motown's financial mismanagement prompted Paula to leave Motown Records.

In the months following Paula Perry would appear in XXL Magazine as the Queen Of The Underground. Subsequent write-ups by The Source, Jive, Rap Sheet, Black Beat and Sophisticated Hair along with D.J.s, and fans constantly clamoring for Paula's music kept her inspired. Paula's many television appearances include Yo! MTV Raps, BET's Rap City, Soul Train and music videos by Queen Latifah, Gangstarr, Nikkie D, Crooklyn Dogers, Apache and Diamond D.

After taking time off to raise her son, Paula has decided put her tumultuous life on wax and on film. Her latest endeavor can be heard on the song titled "Round'em Up" made possible by Ralf Dog, an ill upcoming artist spitten nutten but the illest hardcore. with Hip Hop legends Craig G. (the writer for many of the freestyle battles seen in the movie 8Mile) and Sadat X (Brand Nubians) with production by D.J. Marly Marl (Juice Crew, Biz Markie, M.C. Shan, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J). and domingo, producer of many... She also started a company along with execs... Quaraun Q45 Wages, Ronald and True. The company includes artists such as herself, LILL MAMA Jive's new recording sensation Kadar and Negus. With rapped vans and mix cds along with epks floading the tristate all the way downsouth, Paula is on her way. now she's shopping another deal with a major label many on the table... look out cause here she comes...

"CHILD" demo on myspace

take a listen. this is another demo I put down on zachs latop into logic pro 7. I used a little handheld senheiser mic right through an mbox mini. the shittiest possible set up an ex-audio engineer could ask for. digi can eat a d!@# I'm all about logic nowadays. after climbing the steep learning curve I'm almost at the point where ill never use pro tools again. before I was with everyone else in the philosophy that pro tools is better for some things and logic is better for others such as actually creating music as opposed to just recording and editing it. at first logics recording and editing capabilities were confusing and seemed loose and inaccurate. I just wasn't used to so many options though. I love it now and the other day I opened protools at sneeds and I actually found the editing restrictive. even though I know its not.

so from start to finish logic made these two songs happen. the drums are all being triggered from the logic sampler with my own samples. on top of that I put a real bass direct into logic and use the plug ins that come with logic to make it jump. I also put the guitar direct and used guitar amp pro that also just comes with logic. all the other sounds and instruments came directly from logics built in synths.

the coolest thing for me is even after I recorded my bass and guitar I was able to freely change the key and tempo of the WHOLE sequence to match where I wanted to sing it. all I had to do was turn my audio regions into apple loops with apple loop utility which happens all within logic. after that it shifted with global changes to the song perfectly. that's what's up

back to the songs. "empire" and "child" they just sketches on the laptop that I put together in a couple days. these days its good enough for me. eventually these two songs will grow up into grown ups and end up in the abstract ratrace I call "wildlife"

The Stryder on Wikipedia

Here's a deeper look into my history, summed up very well in Wikipedia's entry on my former band, "The Stryder"...

The Stryder was a band hailing from Long Island, NY. The Band was formed by Peter Toh and Scottie Redix in 1999 after their previous project Yearly disbanded following the depature of bassist Eben D'amico who left to join Saves the Day. They added a vocalist and bassist, John Johansen and Nick Wendel (Respectivly). They released a 7" on Elkion Records and shortly after, signed a deal to Equal Vision Records and released their debut EP "Masquerade in the Key of Crime" in the summer 2000. The band toured extensively and began writing new material in 2001. They added former Glassjaw drummer Durijah Lang, and moved Scottie Redix up to Guitar and backing Vocals. In the summer of 2001 the band parted ways with vocalist John Johansen. 2002 saw the release of "Jungle City Twitch". Debuting a new sound, The Stryder continued to tour the country in support of the new release before disbanding in February of 2003. In 2003/2004, Elkion Records released "Savor The Danger" which contained a collection of old demos and the 2 songs from the 7" previously released on the label. Peter released his first solo EP "Cleopatra" in 2004 on Elkion Records. Durijah moved on to become the drummer of Classic Case. Scottie is now doing a solo project under the name Casonova Brown. In 2006, Peter then went on to start his own record label, Hidden Track Music Group, and released a solo EP titled "Shoes of a Beast". Nick, along with Zach Botham, are in a new band called "The Royal Tease", which is Peter's live band and also on Hidden Track Music Group. Hidden Track is currently being run by Peter, Nick, and Zach, along with close friends Adam Schleichkorn, and James Catusco, and are currently working on Peter's first full-length album, titled "Wildlife".

Allow me to re-introduce myself...

For those who don't know much about me, here is my bio...

At the intersection of bumping your favorite pop tune on your stereo, the late night you spent kicking game to that special someone at the club and the lonely train ride home thinking of all the things you should have said just a few fleeting moments before, theres a quiet kid with a fitted hat and enough music to capture it all with music and a voice that is uniquely his own, but will soon belong to everyone. That kid is Peter Toh, a genre-smashing 24 year old artist/producer from Brooklyn, New York who is poised to be a major force in popular music in the months and years to come. The young maestros genre-spanning mix of uptempo rock, soulful r&b, outsider electronica and straight up snap your fingers pop is unlike anything youre hearing on the radio or in the rock or dance clubs right now and thats just the way he likes it. One listen to Toh's inventive music reveals that although hes forever working out new arrangements, melodies and beats in his musical laboratory in Brooklyn, hes all about creating the rush that comes with hearing a great hook that all people who know an amazing song when they hear one, no matter who or where they are can experience and relate to. I want to represent my generation as we actually exist today, says Toh with the earnestness of a musician on a serious cultural mission. From Top 40 radio hits that you play for your little sister to the dirty rock and roll that makes you want to pick up a guitar and start a band, I want to strip away the pretense and bring it all back to songwriting that people can genuinely relate to. What you hear is what you get. What you hear when you listen to Toh's music is a collision of classic pop songwriting and innovative hip-hop styled production that piles on dance floor-ready beats, sweeping keyboards, snyths and deep bass grooves that create an uplifting soundtrack to his distinctive vocal stylings. And what you get is the feeling that you need to hear it again and again, first to relive the unstoppable hooks and many more times to take in all the music hes so richly layering on each and every track. Toh's sound is both familiar and experimental. And oh yes, its also crazily flavorful. From the club banger "Shoes Of A Beast" and the hard-edged soul of "Criminal" to the dub-tinged, down low funk number "Ages" and the feel-good future club banger "More", Toh is equally adept at channeling his love for confessional songwriters like Elvis Costello as he is his appreciation for pure pop groups like New Edition and Jodeci. The craft of writing a great song with a verse, bridge and hook has been left to cornballs and American Idol singers, I want to bring it back to Motown and then push it forward to 2020, he says. And if his self-released debut EP is any indication, taking back the airwaves will never sound as perfect and necessary as it does right now.
